Performers speak a score based on text appropriated from an English language learning website, focusing on pronunciation instructions and example sentences. Embedded in these examples are glimpses of a colonial narrative, one that values English as the language of power. The language learner is othered through culturally specific references to foreignness, statements about heteronormative relationships, whiteness, and US centrism. In performance, these narratives are rendered through repetition, overlapping, and chorus, highlighting layers of legibility and confusion inherent in cultural exchange.
